Bob's Hobby

Robert G. "Bob" Rouleau Sr., 78, of 85 Athol Rd., has tied his last fly.  He died March 18, 2008 at home.

He was a funny, gentle, welcoming man who enjoyed gardening with his wife on a small plot of land across the road from his wife's family farm. He was Born on April 28, 1929 in Gardner, a son of Gideon and Beatrice (Kelly) Rouleau and moved to this area in 1934.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and fly tying. was known as "The Mayor" at Grand Lake Stream in Maine where he fished every year for close to 50 years, the last 35 years included his son Robert Jr.

Bob enlisted in the United States Army in 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on March 12, 1952.

He married Marguerite "Maggie" (Blackmer) on Aug. 1, 1953.

Bob worked at Union Twist Drill in Athol for 35 years as a methods engineer. He later worked at Niagara Cutter in Athol and retired in 1997.

Bob  belonged to the Athol-Orange Elks Lodge 1837, Trout Unlimited and the Otter River Sportsmen. Bob taught fly-tying courses at the adult classes held at Ralph C. Mahar Regional School in Orange for 8 years.

Bob and Maggie live up on the road to North Orange.

They were married for 54 years.

He took annual summer fishing trips to Maine and on occasion, ito Newfoundland.

Bob tied flies and says he has between 10,000 and 11,000 hanging around and in small compartments in plastic boxes in his living room.

Bob said the Miller's River is coming back and will be stocked heavily in the spring.

There was some debate about whether he will disclose the locations of great places to fish. "Every place I go to fish is a great place to fish," Bob said.
