Race Day 2004 - near the Finish Line


John Berry of Petersham  and Brent Lyesiuk of Orange started this year from 85th position and led all challengers by more than 100 yards at the finish.

 

The  waters of the Millers River churned with the paddles  of 624 canoeists in 312 canoes for more than an hour Saturday as the boats raced, struggled and sometimes capsized on their way to the 41st annual River Rat Race finish line.  Canoeists faced a stiff headwind along the final segment of the race. Hundreds of fans lined the river bank under blue skies to watch and after all was said and done, stayed into the night for parties, beer and cookouts.   Folks wore coordinated outfits, funny hats or just regular clothes for their outings on the river. Nearly 1,000 race watchers adjourned to the new River Street Bar & Grille for music outdoors from Uncle Jack's Band. The day began with a parade in nearby Athol, the starting line of tge race
